Grenada stuns its interior, arguably more so than its coasts. To discover this magical side of Grenada, you have to venture from the beaches and the touristy sections of the island into its rainforest. There rests Mount Qua Qua and a must-do picturesque hike to its summit.
Located in the Grand Etang Forrest Reserve, Mount Qua Qua has one of the most hiked trails on the island. The moderately challenging hike to the mountain's peak at 2,370 feet (722 meters) about sea level takes about two to three hours.
As you proceed to the summit, you will be surrounded by lush vegetation and the songs of birds including the Antillean crested hummingbird (know as the Doctor Bird in Grenada).
The view on the way and at the summit is known to be spectacular. That is, if the weather is in your favor and delivers a blue-skied day; after all, it is a rainforest. But, on the other hand, suppose the weather is not great, do you still go? Yes. That is if you are more of an "experience" type of hiker who likes venturing into nature's wet and foggy elements.
Regardless of the mood of the weather, it's best to hike Qua Qua with either a guide or a group of people, including at least one experienced hiker. Definitely do not go alone; I went with Hidden Treasures Hikes, and Soi the Hiker was my guide. At times it rained, it was foggy, the wind showed me who the boss was, and all I saw was fog at the top. Would I hike Mout Qua Qua again if the skies are not blue? YES! I had a fantastic time. Instead of telling you why I had such a great time, I will show you. Click on the video below.
On your way back home, made a stop at the Welcome Rock. It will be worth your time, I promise.
Working with locals, I provide you with uniquely curated experiences and recommendations that get you off the beaten track and into the heart of the community you travel to.
